Belo Horizonte is a city in the Western part of Brazil. It is built on a number of hills and completely surrounded by mountains. In the vicinity of the city you’ll find a number of big parks. From the Curral Ridge in the “Parque das Mangabeiras” the view over the city is stunning. Surrounding Belo Horizonte is mostly rainforest which is home to hundreds of species of birds and other animals.
There are a number of interesting buildings and museums in Belo Horizonte, but a must-see is the zoo. The zoo is one of the most complete zoos in Latin America and possesses over 900 different species.
Belo Horizonte is the capital of Minas Gerais, an area well-known for the “Cachaça”, a kind of Brazilian rum, often used in the Caipirinha cocktail. Other ingredients are cane-sugar, lime and crushed ice. Originally used as medicine for the flu, nowadays mostly for fun. Either way, drink too much of this local drink and you’ll be feeling sick anyway ;)
Cocktails are enjoyed best in nice weather; the summers in Belo Horizonte provide you with plenty! During summer (September-March) the temperature averages at about 25 degrees Celcius (77 F), but can be as high as 32 (90 F). Most rain falls in December and January.
The public transport (busses and trains) in the region (Minas Gerais) is probably the best in all of Brazil.
Belo Horizonte has got three airports, of which Tancredo Neves/Confins International Airport is the most important one, located at 38 kilometers from the city.
