Agra (Taj Mahal) is without a doubt India’s top tourist destination thanks to its immense mausoleum built out of white marble, the Taj Mahal. This monument of love was built in the early 17th century by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, in loving memory of his third wife Mumtaz Mahal. Not only is the Taj Mahal India’s most famous structure, in the early 2000’s it was elected as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
The Taj Mahal isn’t Agra’s only building of its kind. The Tomb of I'timād-ud-Daulah and the Tomb of Akbar the Great are two impressive mausoleums that are also located in the city, but are often overlooked due to their bigger sister. Of bigger interest among tourists is Agra Fort, built by aforementioned Akbar the Great. The palace was built out of red sandstone and is similar to Delhi’s Red Fort, but is much better preserved. Another not to miss sight on your trip to India’s Golden Triangle, which further consists of Delhi and Jaipur.
Kheria Air Force Station serves as Agra’s airport and has connections to India’s other big tourist destinations. Due to the amount of traffic Agra attracts a new International airport is planned which should go in to service around 2017.
